What is the Act of Psychotherapy?
In Ontario, the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 outlines several controlled acts that can only be performed by qualified professionals to ensure client and patient safety. The controlled act of psychotherapy is one of these restricted acts.
The controlled act of psychotherapy is defined as:
Treating, through the use of psychotherapy techniques and within a therapeutic relationship, an individual who is experiencing a serious disorder of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, perception or memory that may significantly affect judgement, insight, behaviour, communication or social functioning.
This law applies to practitioners who are physically located in Ontario and to those located outside Ontario who provide psychotherapy services to clients living in the province.
